 Laws of Jokgu(English)


* Jokgu Field

1. The playing court surface must be flat, and free of any obstructions.

The playing court must have a free zone which surrounds the court with a recommended minimum width of 5m from every line. Possibly, the free zone shall extend a minimum of 6-7m from the sidelines and 8m from the end lines.

2. The standards of the playing court.

- Sidelines must be 15m long, 7.5m for each team's court.

- Service Area: The service is only allowed in the spaces outside the end lines=3m

- End lines and Centerlines are 6.5m long.

- The height of the net: 1.05m for men adult, and 90cm for women. The height of the net may vary for specific age groups.

(ex: elementary school students)

- Antennas should be 1.5m long.

- Antenna posts should be fixed to the playing surface at a distance

of 21 cm (ball diameter)from each side lines.

*The standards of the playing area may vary according to the match and ground condition.

*If the ball bounces outside the antenna, the opposition scores one point. If a player touches the ball before it lands outside the court and returns the ball to the opposition court, the ball remains in play.


* Rules

1. A team consists of one team manager, and 7 players.


2. The corps of officials is composed of the first referee, the second referee (scorekeeper), and two line judges. But the member of judges can be changed by the match manager.


3. The service kick can be made by any player of each team.

- At the moment of the service kick, the ball should not touch the floor. If the ball touches the floor, the opposition scores one point. If the server delays the game, it is charged as a "team player warning". Further delays cause the opposition to score one point.

- If the serve fails to land in the opposite court, or if the server steps on the sideline or the end line, the opposition scores one point.

- The service is the act of the server kicking the ball after the referee blows the service whistle.


4. Each team is entitled to a maximum of three bounces and three touches.


5. The players may shift positions.


6. If the ball touches other objects, the opposition scores one point.


7. If a player on the offensive or defensive team touches any part of the net, the opposition

scores one point. If the player's apparel touches the net or interferes with the opponent's play, the play is cancelled.


8. If the ball bounces outside the court or contacts other objects, the opposition scores a point.

But if the ball doesn't touch the court, the ball is still in play.


9. If the ball bounces twice in succession, the opposition scores one point. And if the ball bounces more than 3 times in succession before being returned to the opposition's court, the opposition scores one point.

10. If the ball touches a player's body more than twice, the ball is in play. However, if a team touches the ball more than 3 times before returning the ball to the opposition's court, the opposition scores one point.


11. Holding means the ball to visibly come to rest in the player's head, legs and feet. If a player holds up, presses, clings to or pushes the ball, the opposition scores one point.


12. "Over net" happens when any part of a player's body on the offensive or defensive team crosses over the net. If a player touches the ball before the ball's crossing over the net completely, the ball is in play. If any player's apparel interferes with the opponent's play, the opposition scores one point.


13. If the ball makes contact with any part of the body other than the feet (under part of the knee) and/or head (upper part of the chin), the opposition scores one point.(Body Touch)


14. The centerline is merely a point of reference for each team. It has nothing to do with the points of the games.


15. Blocking is allowed and regarded as one time body touch.


16. Net play is allowed unconditionally. However, net play is only allowed between the antennas. If the ball contacts the antennas, the referee, the posts, the scoreboard, or the post bands, the opposition scores one point.



17. Only substitutes recorded on the roster may participate in the match. Three substitutions are the maximum permitted per team per set. A substituted player may not reenter the current set and may reenter the next set.


18. Sets are played up to 15 points. Teams change sides when one team has scored 8 points in the deciding set.


19. A match is composed of three sets. (On special occasions, a five-set match is possible.)


20. In case the game goes to deuce, play continues until a two-point lead is reached, or one team reaches the ceiling of 19 points.


21. Timeouts must be requested only by a team manager, and may be granted only by the first referee. Each team is entitled to a maximum of one timeout per set for duration of one minute.


22. Only the game captain may speak to the referee to ask for an explanation or interpretation of the Rules. And only team manager may appeal to the administrating camp by submitting an official appeal form.


23. When the ball is in the air, it is considered in play.


* Game

1. The game proceeds after the referee blows the service whistle. The point the opposition scores before the game is maintained and the point the team gets is not counted.



2. If the server delays the game, it is charged as a “team player warning.” Further delays cause the opposition to score one point.


3. Regardless of defense, point is scored with rally point.


4. Before and after the game, all players must stand in line in front of end line and act following signals of first referee. Teams change sides with counterclockwise direction following signals of first referee. Teams are entitled to a maximum of three minutes break.


5. All of rights in court are entitled to the first referee and accordingly he takes all the responsibilities.

6. The final judgment ruled by first referee can not be changed but if the clear judgment is not made before ruling the final judgment, it is finalized after discussion of four referees.


7. The team which did service in 1st set does service too in 3rd set but service in 2nd set is done by the opposition.


8. In case of rain when bound is not made in majority of ground, it is regarded as rainy situation.


9. When rainy situation is made, 2 points system turns to 1 point.


10. Even if it rains, game still proceeds but in severe rain, whether or not the game proceeds is made after discussion of heads.





* Clothes

1. Team members except the manager must dress same clothes. Players can wear long or half sleeve shirt and shorts. Team captain must get a captain band in left arm.

Wearing tights is allowed between March and November in below 10C weather. Players can wear long pants but if the ball touches the pants, the opposition scores one point.


2. In order to protect player’s eyes and court shoes must be flat and studless. But players should wear Jokgu shoes in an official game. Jokgu shoes should be the one which is acknowledged by National Jokgu Association in consideration of game quality, player safety.


3. A hempen hood should be 70cam by 70cam and less than 1mm thick square. But wearing hat is not allowed.


* Game Ball

1. Acknowledged ball (Recognition)

It is composed of 12 pieces and weight is 330-360g. Air pressure is 0.4-0.5kgf/c m2 (in outside, it is added 10%) and a ball should spring back over 30% in unpaved ground. The ball is 200-205mm in diameter.


2. Official ball (Only)

According to the rule, the official ball should be used in national game. The ball is revealed and one enterprise is chosen.
